A healthy balanced diet contains the following group of foods:  vegetables, fruits, grains, protein, dairy, carbohydrates, and saturated fats. Most times, you’ll hear experts say “Avoid too much fat”. Actually, they mean the bad fats. Alright, so now which is the bad and the good fat?

Unsaturated fats are loosely packed fats. Chemically, they have double bonds between their carbon chains and are usually liquid at room temperature. This is the good fat. Want to be healthy? Then stick with unsaturated fats.

These fats increase blood levels of high-density lipoprotein which in turn reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. Examples of foods rich in unsaturated fats are spinach, fish (especially Salmon), walnuts, olive oil, and soybeans.

On the other hand, saturated fats are tightly packed. Chemically, they have a single bond between their carbon chains and are mostly solids at room temperature. These are the bad fats. They increase blood levels of low-density lipoprotein which in turn increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Saturated fats can be found in foods such as pork and fatty pieces of beef.

You should endeavor to limit the consumption of saturated fats and replace them with essential monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
