skin care tips

Your skin is your best accessory, take good care of it” We’ve all heard this quote at one point or the other in our lives, and yeah, truer words were never said. Our skin is the first thing that everyone notices about us and some might even say our skin gives an insight into our personalities as individuals.

It is of paramount importance that we take good care of our skin. While taking care of our skin can be a tedious task sometimes, and more often than not, we don’t want to do more than our daily routine of bathing twice a day, and sometimes, heartbreakingly, even once but with each new passing day, each environmental change, diet, stress level, and lifestyle, we tend to notice signs that our skin needs more care.

This article highlights some skin issues you need to pay attention to.

Signs Your Skin Needs More Care

Some of us might not see the need to take special care of our skin, especially in the absence of serious skin conditions, but here are five top signs your skin needs more care:

1. Watch out for Hyperpigmentation

skin types

Hyperpigmentation is a common condition in which patches of skin are darker than the surrounding skin. A common cause of this is excess melanin, a pigment that gives skin its color. Hyperpigmentation is mainly caused by excessive sun exposure, especially without sunscreen or sun protection. Hence, noticing dark patches on your skin just might be a sign that your skin needs more care.

What you should do: It is not always possible to prevent hyperpigmentation as it is found in some cases that a skin biopsy can narrow down the cause. You can protect yourself from hyperpigmentation by using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, avoiding the sun during the time of the day when it’s strongest which is typically from 10 am to 4 am, and ensure to wear hats or clothing that blocks the sunlight.

2. Dull skin

Dull skin is literally the opposite of bright skin. Dull skin is a skin that lacks healthy radiance, luster, and glow. Dull skin can be caused by the accumulation of dead skin cells on the skin without being exfoliated, dehydration, lack of moisturization, unhealthy diet, wrong skincare products, etc.  The appearance of dull skin is definitely a telltale that our skin needs more care.

What you should do: Exfoliating weekly is one of the most effective ways to keep skin from looking dull, eat well, stay hydrated, and drink lots of water!

3.  Watch out for increased wrinkles

5 Signs Your Skin Needs More Care

It’s inevitable that as we grow older, we begin to notice fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity as our skin’s natural elastin and collagen production levels decline. These changes appear slowly as one age, but in a case of increased and excessive wrinkles, there just might be a reason to be more careful as it’s a sign that our skin needs more care.

What you should do: Moisturize regularly, this traps water into the skin which in turn masks tiny lines and creases. Other important things to do in case of wrinkles include: limit sugar intake, quit smoking, wear sunscreen, change sleep position, and wash your face.

4. Dry and flaky skin

None of us want to see dry, flaky skin although in some cases this might not be a serious skin condition however it is a bother to a great number of us. Dry and flaky skin can be caused by a lack of moisturization and exfoliation, constant usage of harsh and drying soaps, continuous hot baths, smoking, spending too much time in direct sunlight, etc and when we start to notice our skin becomes dry and flaky, then it’s a sign that our skin needs more care.

What you should do: In case of dry and flaky skin, applying a topical anti-inflammatory agent such as aloe vera can help get rid of dry and flaky skin and to get rid of dry skin fast, try using lukewarm water and a soft washcloth on your face to loosen any skin that is flaking and ensure not to peel your skin especially when it’s wet.

5. Acne breakouts

oily skin careI bet you all will agree with me that acne breakouts can be really frustrating especially those that leave dark spots in their wake! I remember having to deal with those ones, I was so insecure that I could barely find the confidence to go out. Acne breakouts can be due to a number of reasons, including an unhealthy diet,  stress, wrong skin care products, etc.

What you should do: Acne breakout can be really frustrating and one can easily have acne treated by using products available at a drugstore however this can take some time to be effective, here are some simple tips to help get rid of acne.

  • Properly moisturize your skin
  • Stay hydrated
  • Limit makeup
  • Don’t touch your face
  • Limit sun exposure
  • Properly wash your face to prevent pimples breakouts and to remove excess oil, sweat, and dirt.

When we start to notice the appearance of these on our skin, especially our face, it’s a big sign that our skin needs more care, either in the sense of finding suitable products that meet the needs of our skin or having a consistent skincare routine.

The above skin conditions are common signs your skin needs more care. Wearing sunscreen, preventing excessive sun exposure, consistent skincare routine, and trying home remedies are some of the ways to keep these skin conditions in check.
